West Kallada Grama Panchayat

📍 Location & Boundaries

West Kallada Panchayat is one of the six panchayats under the Sasthamkotta Block in Kunnathur Taluk of Kollam District. This panchayat is bordered by Sasthamkotta Panchayat to the north, Sasthamkotta and East Kallada Panchayats to the east, Munroethuruthu Panchayat to the south, and Thevalakkara and Mynagappally Panchayats to the west. The panchayat covers an area of 13.36 sq. km. The Panchayat Office is located at Valiyapadam in the 4th Ward.

⛰️ Terrain & Climate

About 70% of the total landform in the panchayat consists of valley regions (lowlands). Situated at an elevation of about 30 meters above sea level, the western, northern, and eastern parts consist of elevated plains and sloping terrains. West Kallada Panchayat falls within the Southern Midland agro-climatic zone. The Kallada River, Sasthamkotta Lake, and Ashtamudi Lake surrounding the panchayat exert a significant influence on the local climate, helping maintain a moderate climate.

💧 Water Bodies

Most parts of the panchayat are surrounded by water bodies. The freshwater Sasthamkotta Lake lies to the north, the Kallada River flows along a six-kilometer stretch to the southeast, and Pattadavu Lake, a part of Ashtamudi Lake, is situated to the west. Other major water bodies include Chempil Lake, Chempu Lake, Akathu Kal, and Vattachira. Interconnected natural streams, man-made canals, and ponds serve as the surface water sources here — prominent among them the Nattuvathil and Valanjavarambu streams (originating from Sasthamkotta Lake and emptying into the Kallada River), and the Cheriyar, which also originates from Sasthamkotta Lake and joins the Kallada River.

🌱 Soil

Since the panchayat lies within the floodplain of the Kallada River, alluvial soil deposited by the river is predominantly found across most of the area. In addition to this, laterite soil is also found here.
